EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy of Education

Teaching art is what I was born to do. My teachers in high school and college made the biggest impact in my life and taught me how to express myself through my art. Now I want to mentor students the way mine mentored me. My philosophical approach to Art Education is both art-focused and student-centered.

Art is observation, communication, and connection, all combined and shown through a technical and creative process. I will teach students basic artistic technical skills and how to apply those skills to their lives. My students will know that art is more than just drawing, painting and sculpture. Through a process of observation, they will come to realize that art is everywhere that they look. Through the practice of artist statements and critiques students will be proficient at communicating not only what they see, but also what they think and feel.

Teaching art is not just about creating formal artists but also focuses on the individual students. Each student has a unique set of skills and learning processes that can be explored in the classroom. I will know my students and their abilities and set consistent expectations for them all.

As a lifelong learner, I will actively seek advice from my collaborating teachers, peers, and students to help me grow as an educator, and regularly reflect on my teaching by keeping documentation. The knowledge that I have obtained and will continue to acquire, combined with the determination to succeed will be the key elements in me becoming an excellent art teacher.
