June 2018 / March 2022

After vacationing and exploring the Tampa Bay area, first in 2018 and then again four years later in 2022 I can assure you, it is as amazing as the Pinterest photos. Both times I was lucky enough to get to stay with family while visiting. They gave me tips from a local perspective and told me all about hidden gems around the bay area. I've done everything from, enjoying amusement parks, exploring eateries, sunbathing at the beach, getting lost in nature parks, and adventuring into the bay in kayaks.

Read more about the specific details of my travels below.

Places to Visit

This is the #1 activity I recommend to anyone visiting Florida. We chose to do the "Sunset Kayaking with Bioluminescence" and it was a wonderful experience. They had single kayaks or doubles for those who were less experienced in kayaking or those who brought children with them (8+). After going over the basics of kayaking the guide takes you into the bay and through the mangroves all while pointing out wildlife and nature. Once it gets dark the Glowing Jellies come out and it is MAGICAL. The jellyfish are non-venomous and when touched their glow increases. The trip is not in or near Tampa, they are based out of Titusville, FL but take the bus, rent a car, book an Uber, or walk because it is well worth it.

Tips: Bring your camera (I did not and regret not getting photos of this experience.)

Manatees are a common attraction when visiting Tampa, but this viewing center is unique for its location and the number of manatees that are estimated to visit here per year. The viewing center is owned by Tampa Electric. The Big Bend Power Station pushes out heat discharge to a canal that is state and federally designated to provide critical protection from the cold for the unique, gentle animals. When first pulling up I felt like I took a wrong turn because it took me straight to a power plant, but continue to follow the directions and it will take you to the viewing center parking lot. There are decks, and platforms overlooking the water to see the manatees, gift shops to buy souvenirs from, a food shack for when you need some snacks, and even a shallow pool full of stingrays that you can touch! It is off the beaten path but well worth it.

Tips: The park is only open from November to April.

Tarpon Springs is not only known as the sponge capital of the world but also for its Greek Heritage. Our day was spent seeing how sponges are caught and sold, and shopping the mom-and-pop shows all along the waterfront. Throughout the day we stopped at some Greek Style Restaurants including Mykonos, where I got an amazing gyro, and then had amazing coffee and sweets at Hellas Restaurant & Bakery

Each spring, the Florida Strawberry Festival welcomes visitors to enjoy exhibits of agriculture, commerce, industry, livestock, fine arts, horticulture, and crafts. The Festival shines through showing social events, contests, youth developmental programs, top-name entertainment, and parades with glorious floats and high-stepping marching bands. (Emark from: https://flstrawberryfestival.com/) . When I got the opportunity to go with my best friend we were going to skip it and find something else to do, but I am so glad we did not. From shortcakes to ice cream to the very berries themselves we had the best day. The Festival usually takes place around February or March but for exact dates make sure to go to the official website.

Tips: The strawberries sold right outside of the entree gate are the best and cheapest. But make sure you wash all berries you buy from any local farmer before consumption.

Busch Gardens is an Asian and African animal theme park that highlights rollercoasters and restaurants. have never liked amusement parks as I get sick on rollercoasters but Busch Gardens had so much more to offer I was rarely bored. While my family enjoyed the coasters I enjoyed walking through the zoo, and seeing all the sights while my family enjoyed the coasters. Along with the normal rollercoasters, there are also water rides that are fun to enjoy!

- Tips: Bring good walking shoes we walked upwards of 7 miles while here. Do not wear loose clothing if you choose to participate in the rides.

Adventure Island is Tampa's largest water park! When we got our Busch Gardens tickets we also got a days pass to Adventure Island. While we were tuckered out from all the rides at Busch from the day before this was a great relaxation day. We spent the day trying out all the water slides, relaxing in the lazy river, and sunbathing on the free pool chairs.

- Tips: Colossal Curl was my favorite water slide, not only did we spin around in a whirlpool but we also went down a very unexpected dive.

If you are looking for white sand, and a picture-perfect beach, Madeira is the one for you. When we went in June the water was not rough but still pretty cloudy. But in March the break was so close to the beach that the water was only up to our waist and we were getting fully hit with waves. Each time I went I had a blast though.

Tips: Bring sunscreen and wear it even when you are in the water. Yours Truly, - A Very Red Tourist.

This state park is one of Florida’s most-loved parks, Honeymoon Island has more than four miles of beach to explore along with a three-mile trail through one of the last remaining virgin slash pine forests. When I was there it was a cloudier cool day so I did not swim but I did take advantage of the three-mile trail through the forest. It was beautiful and led to a peaceful beach where we watched cargo boats, and cruise boats cruise down the water.

Tips: The trail (at least in March) consists of pavement to packed dirt to mud to sand and then back to the pavement so wear good hiking shoes. Three miles does not seem long until you've been walking through trees for half of it and have no idea which direction you are going, but just stay on the path and continue on.

Most of all enjoy the sunshine, ocean, and the time you are there. I know I did.
